Shadow Of The Erdtree new weapon types
Below are all the new weapon types within Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree:
Beast Claws
Beast Claws tend to scale better with Strength. |Image credit:Rock Paper Shotgun/Bandai Namco
Although Claw weapons are nothing new to Elden Ring players, the newBeast Clawsvariant is more aggressive, faster, and has more exaggerated attacks than its predecessor.
Like previous Claws, Beast Claws tend to have a passive Bleed build-up effect and excel in close combat where speed is a priority. For this reason, this new category is one to watch if you’ve cultivated a build to inflict poise damage too.

Great Katanas
We suggest pairing Great Katanas with the Rellana’s Cameo Talisman for added damage after holding a stance for 2 seconds. |Image credit:Rock Paper Shotgun/Bandai Namco
As you would expect, the newGreat Katanacategory within Shadow Of The Erdtree is a larger, heavier variant of the standard Katanas. These are a great middle-ground for quality orStrength buildswho enjoy the grace of the Katana moveset but want to inflict more power with their blades.

Hand-to-Hand Arts

One of the most curious of the new weapon types is theHand-to-Hand Artswhich is technically classed as a variant on the Fists category but forgoes any weapons at all. Instead, it is a ‘style’ that you learn.
This is great news for anyone hoping to channel their inner Monk, as these Hand-to-Hand Arts usually involve combos, kicks and finisher moves to take down your opponents. As it is quite different what most Elden Ring players are used to, you can expect a high learning curve to execute successfully but when you do, there is a huge potential payoff.

Light Greatswords
One of thebest weapons in Shadow Of The Erdtree, Rellana’s Twin Blades is a Light Greatsword.Image credit:Rock Paper Shotgun/Bandai Namco
Light GreatswordslikeMiladyhave the same reach as aGreatswordbut feature faster combos and swings which makes life a lot easier for anyone looking to carve out a quality build and share their stats beweenDexterityandStrength.
The success of this category usually depends on the Weapon Skill orAshes of Warinfused with the blade. In Milady’s case, combining it with the newWing Stanceis usually a recipe for success as it offers the Tarnished a quick three-slash combo and heavy upwards thrust which quickly wracks up Bleed damage on foes.

Perfume Bottles

Backhand Blade
Backhand Blades are best suited to a Dexterity-focused build. |Image credit:Rock Paper Shotgun/Bandai Namco
Backhand Bladesare held ‘backwards’ and can be dual-wielded to deliver surprisingly fast combo attacks which work particularly well with">Dexterity builds. Unlike other dual-wield weapons, these swords also dodge incoming attacks which is a huge bonus.
The category’s namesake, the regular Backhand Blade comes with a particularly impressive Weapon Skill, the ‘Blind Spot’, which uses FP to make a sidestep dodge and then deliver a brutal follow-up attack to an enemy’s side. This type of aggressive yet precise combat has huge potential, especially for when you need to chip away atbosses.

Throwing Weapons
Throwing Weapons can be useful for low but consistent damage. |Image credit:Rock Paper Shotgun/Bandai Namco
For long ranged attacks,Throwing Weaponscan be used. These are small daggers that can be thrown and will appear back in the armament slot of the Tarnished to be used again.
Although there is only one Throwing Dagger in the DLC as of writing and it doesn’t provide much damage, the utility uses for this weapon category are important. If you prefer a more methodic approach to Elden Ring, you can use a Throwing Dagger to lure and chip off stragglers from groups of enemies at a time to avoid being overwhelmed.

Thrusting Shields
With a Thrusting Shield you can have the best of both worlds. |Image credit:Rock Paper Shotgun/Bandai Namco
If you want equal parts offense and defence, theThrusting Shieldcategory may be for you. As well as blocking the usual damage stats, these shields are also kitted out with a spear you can attack with. As such, they are technically classed as weapons.
When performing an off-hand attack with one of these shields, you can thrust it into enemies and deal damage whilst also protecting your Tarnished. This instantly makes them more useful than a regular shield and worth having on one of your off-hand slots (unless it interferes with your Weapon Skill moves). Of the two available, the Carian Thrusting Shield is slightly better as it can also execute Magic damage along with Physical (although, you’ll need some stats inIntelligenceto wield it properly).
